Brief Description:  Glareshield and instrument panel

Did some online shopping at Aircraft Spruce to take advantage of their Valentines Day sale that ended today. Most items were 7.5% off. With my free shipping on the "Pilot" VISA card, it was time to buy.

Did some additional fitting of the glareshield, which I have made removable and am using 10-32 screws instead of rivets to secure it. The screws go into tapped holes in the longeron.

Fitted and updrilled the instrument panel in its designed position. I've been waffling about what to do with that, and I'm sure I'm not done with the final position or arrangement. I have a MicroAir radio to install and it requires about 6-1/2" of rear clearance. By moving the instrument panel to the front of the glareshield, there is just enough space to install the radio in the panel using right angle connectors on the back.

I had an idea for panel lighting using a strip of LED's that I wanted to try, and I needed the lip on the glareshield to install the strip. The strip is visible in the second image, and the 3rd image shows the illumination. There is a dimmer on the LED's, and in the picture they are much brighter than would be used, but the level works good for a picture. Until I install real instruments, I don't know if shadows from the instrument bezels will be a problem given the steep angle of the illumination.

I have a couple of choices on instrumentation. I have an older model MGL Stratomaster, and that with the Garmin AV8OR would provide all the info I'd need (3/21/12 entry). I also have a set of standard gauges, including a Westach quad instrument for engine monitoring. Right now I'm leaning toward the standard instrument setup to minimize the electronics for initial flight testing. I will figure a way to make the instrument panel removable to easily go all electronic in the future.

The LED's in the picture are powered by the converted computer power supply I talked about in my 4/24/12 entry. Very handy for this sort of thing.
